Systematic Theology I: Scripture, God, and Christ

The first of three Systematic Theology courses, organizing what the whole Bible teaches into coherent doctrinal categories. This course covers Bibliology (the doctrine of Scripture), Theology Proper (the doctrine of God, including His attributes and the Trinity), and Christology (the doctrine of Christ, including His deity, humanity, atonement, and resurrection).

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the nature and purpose of systematic theology as a discipline
  • Understand the doctrine of Scripture - revelation, inspiration, inerrancy, canon, and sufficiency
  • Understand the existence and knowability of God
  • Understand God's incommunicable and communicable attributes
  • Understand the doctrine of the Trinity
  • Understand the deity and humanity of Christ and the hypostatic union
  • Understand the virgin birth, sinlessness, atonement, and resurrection of Christ

Syllabus

Overview

Systematic Theology I organizes what the whole Bible teaches into coherent doctrinal categories, covering Bibliology (Scripture), Theology Proper (God and the Trinity), and Christology (the person and work of Christ).

Reading Plan

Week 1: introduction to systematic theology. Weeks 2-3: Bibliology. Weeks 4-7: Theology Proper (existence of God, attributes, the Trinity). Weeks 8-12: Christology (deity, humanity, virgin birth, atonement, resurrection).

Required Materials

A personal Bible in one of the following standard translations: ESV, NIV, NASB 1995, CSB, LSB, or NLT; a notebook or journal for reading notes and reflection.

Grading & Completion

Assessment focuses on engagement with Scripture and demonstration of comprehension. Students complete weekly reading assignments and a short weekly quiz covering that week's material. A final exam covering the entire course is available once every week has been passed.

Course Outcomes

  • Upon completion, students will be able to articulate a biblically grounded doctrine of Scripture
  • Upon completion, students will be able to explain God's attributes and the doctrine of the Trinity
  • Upon completion, students will be able to explain the person and work of Christ, including the atonement and resurrection
