The Gifts of the Spirit
This course provides a careful, balanced study of the spiritual gifts described in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 4. Students will examine the purpose, diversity, and proper use of spiritual gifts within the body of Christ, and will be equipped to identify and exercise their own gifts in a way that builds up the church in love.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the purpose and source of spiritual gifts as given by the Holy Spirit
- Survey the specific gifts named in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4
- Examine 1 Corinthians 13 and the priority of love over any individual gift
- Approach more debated gifts, such as tongues and prophecy, with balanced, biblical care
- Identify practical ways to discover and exercise one's own spiritual gifts
Syllabus
Overview
This course provides a careful, balanced survey of the spiritual gifts described in Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12-14, and Ephesians 4. Students will examine the purpose and diversity of spiritual gifts, address more debated gifts with biblical care, and be equipped to identify and exercise their own gifts in a way that builds up the church in love.
Reading Plan
Week 1: the Holy Spirit and the purpose of spiritual gifts. Week 2: Romans 12. Week 3: 1 Corinthians 12. Week 4: prophecy and discernment. Week 5: tongues and interpretation. Week 6: teaching, wisdom, and knowledge. Week 7: 1 Corinthians 13 and the priority of love. Week 8: discovering and exercising your gifts today.
Required Materials
A personal Bible in one of the following standard translations: ESV, NIV, NASB 1995, CSB, LSB, or NLT; a notebook or journal for reading notes and reflection.
Grading & Completion
Assessment focuses on engagement with Scripture and demonstration of comprehension. Students complete weekly reading assignments and a short weekly quiz covering that week's material. A final exam covering the entire course is available once every week has been passed.

- Upon completion, students will be able to explain the biblical purpose and diversity of spiritual gifts
- Upon completion, students will be able to identify the specific gifts named in the New Testament and their function in the church
- Upon completion, students will be able to articulate a balanced, love-centered approach to exercising spiritual gifts
